-inequality must be overcome

Expropriation: sharing without consent

-The action of givin up one’s whole property. Also the action of fifing up control of.

-Removal from the ownership or domonion of.

-The action of taking (property) out of owner’s hands (especially by public authority)

Big data: an approach that uses large amounts of data to generate preditictive or descriptive insights (Humphreyes, 53)

LECTURE 13- 10/24/17

-#me too, social meida phenomenon, there is legitimacy, participation, different use of social media platforms,wide reach

-How might we define #metoo as a social media phenomenon? Cultural aspect, continuation of instances and experiences being brought forth, systematic (Harvey Weinstein scandals, he has over 60 victims), this prompts other victims to speak out on their experience

-Jose Van dijks’ platform of…:

-technology (making us aware of the scaled of the issue, phenomenon of #metoo), culture (set of practices established around a society), society (people who are “doing” culture)

-Provenance, Tarana Burke coined “Me Too” in 2006 and made a MySpace page for the movement.

-Society, how many people participated in #metoo, what was the nature of their participation, mass scale movements

-Research methods: how we might discover the nature of people’s participation, search up the # on different social media platforms and see whose stories come up, who’s supporting the phenomenon, see the articles, can also see who’s using the # as a meme or a joke

-Can see how it overlaps and associates with other social issues (ex. woman who purchased a gun in response to her sexual assault)

-Researching a social interaction (Humphreys chapter 4)

-digital anthropology and netnographic methods (online research method applied to understanding social interaction in contemporary digital communications contexts)

-textual analysis

-network analysis (engagement, spread, how far it had reached)

-machine learning and big data (using computers to do number crunching to figure out volume of information you are looking for)

-Ways of researching/ analyzing

-google trends

-news article

-social media platforms, assemble corpus, extract specific materials

-research articles
