Abstract for “Extended Self in a Digital World”

In this article Belk explores what the self means in a digital world. A lot of this representation is done through the extension of oneself through avatars and such online. Belk has 5 main concepts he focuses in the article: Dematerialization (the movement away from physical possessions and towards digital ones), Reembodiment (becoming a presence online that is separate from one’s physical self) , Sharing (what people are sharing online, the thought process behind it and some issues that may arise), Co-construction of self (how the internet is aiding in our construction of ourselves) and Distributed memory (memory keeping in a digital age). In each of these sections Belk provides examples of how each relates to the extension of oneself online. Belk closes with areas where things may change in the future.
