Social Media Interview

In a society where it seems that everyone is using social media, it can be difficult to find someone who can talk about not using social media. My friend Lina is one of the few people I know who doesn’t use social media.  I interviewed Lina about her experience of living without social media.

How does it feel to not use social media?

Honestly, I don’t really know. Since I have never used, this is all I have ever known. So to me it’s just normal.

Does it ever make you feel like you are missing out on things? News, happenings?

With events sometimes, yes. But less missing out, but rather being kind of uninformed. There are usually people telling me if something is happening and then I just go along without knowing any specifics. Though there have been instances where I completely missed out on an event because I did not know that it would happen. But so far it was never anything I was too hung up about.

I would not want my news to origin from SM anyway since it can be very unreliable. And I don’t feel that I miss out on anything in that regard.

Do you find it difficult to stay away from social media?

No, not at all. It seems pretty exhausting to be constantly informed about what other people are doing.

How do people usually react to when you tell them you don’t use social media?

Most common would be: “Oh, really?” and then moving on. I have heard “wish I weren’t either” or “good choice, never do it” pretty often too.

Though I have once been called arrogant for saying that I don’t need people in my life who can’t be bothered to contact me if they can’t find me on Facebook. But then that guy was an idiot in general, so there’s that…

What’s your opinion on that everybody is using social media and has the need to post things they do online?

I am a firm believer in letting people do whatever they want as long as they don’t hurt anyone. I would not want to do it myself and I would not want to see it, so I stay off SM, and I don’t really dwell on it.
